  • On Nov 28, 2018, my life changed forever. I was 21 weeks pregnant and received a Spina Bifida diagnosis for my baby. I had 5 minutes to decide if I wanted to

    1. Terminate

    2. Carry on to the unknown

    3. Jump immediately on a plane to Toronto and hope to be a successful candidate for open fetal surgery.

I jumped on the plane, left my life as I knew it. On Dec 13 2018, Blake and I become the 15th duo in Canada to have open fetal surgery for repair.

I suddenly became a medical parent, an advocate, and a complexity.

Blake is a paraplegic and I now lived in a world that was closed to me. We couldn’t go to businesses, or events, all because of physical barriers. This extended past physical disability as I became immersed in the community, to see inclusion and participation for all people as a priority.

Since 2019, my family has faced multiple adversities including, 10+ surgeries, a pandemic, healthcare roadblocks and accessibility roadblocks. I don’t believe everything happens for a reason, but I do believe something good can sprout from hardship.

My professional background gives me a unique skillset that has aided me in finding solutions, most of those solutions are in the way we do things, Policy, Procedure and Procurement.

I am level headed in my approach and I come to the table prepared with ideas, comparables, opportunities, risks and real budget ideas.

I am not naïve to budget concerns, and have been working and creating multi-million dollar infrastructure budgets for over 15 years.

It is important we are not wasteful with money as it effects what we have available to create community well being, its important to be both socially and fiscally responisble.

The things that we create need to be to the best possible level of inclusivity and the things that aren’t need to be prioritized and find partnerships to be solved.

This is how I have been successful in creating change.
